Stem cell treatments are a very hot topic. The media and internet are filled with marketing and false information as to what these treatments are capable of accomplishing. At Sunstone Regenerative Medicine, we value and take pride in our patient’s outcomes and look forward to seeing them in the future for other problems. As members of the community looking to build lasting relationships, we only offer you the latest information on what is truly possible with your treatments.
We want you to understand that we are believers in these treatments when they are appropriately applied. In patients who can benefit from them, the results can be incredible. While there is no one-size-fits-all for stem cell treatments, we want to help educate you on the options our team of surgeons may use when creating a customized treatment plan.
Options for treatment include:
- platelet rich plasma
- autologous bone marrow concentrate
- amniotic fluid or tissue
- umbilical cord products.
All of these have shown promise in treating various conditions when applied appropriately. It is very important to understand that not all PRP’s or Amniotic Products are created equally. There are numerous products with different properties that can greatly affect their success.
Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP), for example, can be prepared in hundreds of different ways that affects the number of platelets, concentration of growth factors and presence of white blood cells. It is vital that your provider understand this differentiation and applies the appropriate preparation for your particular ailment.
Amniotic products also vary widely in their constituents and ability to provide a successful treatment. It has become apparent that amniotic fluid does not contain “live” stem cells and only contain growth factors and anti-inflammatory proteins (cytokines). Amniotic fluid does have the ability to inhibit inflammation and slow the destruction of cartilage tissue.
Umbilical Cord Tissue Products have recently entered the orthobiologic arena. These products are prepared from the Wharton’s Jelly of the cord, amniotic membrane and cord blood. Wharton’s Jelly has been shown to contain an abundance growth factors, cytokines, and hyaluronic acid. It is currently debatable whether live MSC’s (mesenchymal stem cells) are present in these products after being thawed. We only use the best products available from companies who have third party testing for confirmation.
Bone marrow concentrate (your own bone marrow) has the most data available for us to utilize and reference. BMC has shown tremendous benefit for patients suffering from arthritis, Partial tendon tears and lumbar disc disease. Bone marrow concentrate has also been shown to contain an abundance growth factors, cytokines and MSC’s (mesenchymal stem cells).
It is also important to note that your likelihood of success with any of these treatments is directly proportional to the severity of your disease. There are times when these products administered alone will not improve your situation, but when combined with surgery, the potential to greatly improve your long-term outcome is increased. Our surgeons have the experience and knowledge to know which products and surgical options will create your optimal treatment plan.
