Areas of Interest & Background

Dr. Jones is a fellowship-trained orthopaedic surgeon who specializes in the treatment of shoulder problems from the most simple to the most complex, as well as sports medicine related knee injuries. During his training at Duke University Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Dr. Jones had some amazing mentors who are responsible for directing him to pursue these specialties.

While his primary interests are Total Shoulder Replacement, arthroscopic shoulder repairs as well as arthroscopic ligament repairs, meniscus repairs and cartilage repair in the knee, he recognized very early in his practice that surgery is not always the answer. There are many injuries or problems that orthopaedic surgeons see every day where there is simply not a surgical “cure”.

The most prevalent of these injuries include cartilage degeneration (arthritis), degenerative tendon injuries and spinal disc degeneration. Being a problem solver, and a perfectionist, Dr. Jones began scouring the literature for alternative non-surgical treatment options for these patients. During his research, Dr. Jones learned about Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP). This was in 2008 when PRP was a procedure that dentists had been using for years to help deal with bone defects. However, it was still relatively unknown to the orthopaedic community. There were some preliminary studies that had been performed evaluating it as a treatment for degenerative tendon injuries of the elbow. These studies were showing great promise with results equal to the surgical procedure performed for this problem.

So at this point, he began offering PRP as a non-surgical treatment option for lateral epicondylitis (tennis elbow) and medial epicondylitis (golfer’s elbow). Dr. Jones’ first patient was actually his father, who at 66 was still an avid tennis player (and remains actively playing today). He had suffered from tennis elbow for 2 years. His local orthopaedic surgeon in Georgia had performed several steroid injections that only provided very temporary relief. After 2 treatments with PRP and a few months of physical therapy, Senior Jones was back on the court and has never had a problem since. Since that first patient, Dr. Jones has treated thousands of patients with various ailments with PRP with great success. These patients can expect >90% success in terms of healing the injury.

Early on in this process, Dr. Jones received some criticism from some of his orthopaedic colleagues. As a specialty, orthopaedic surgeons tend to be late in adopting “new therapies”. However, the literature was very clear that there was very little downside. In fact, the risk of complications from these treatments was minimal. In fact, it is lower than surgery.

Of course, this was only the beginning and the secret did not stay a secret for very long. By 2009 PRP was becoming the “go to” treatment for many of these injuries in professional athletes. With these athletes utilizing these treatments, the public became aware very quickly and began seeking it out for themselves.

Additionally, studies began looking at PRP as a treatment option for cartilage degeneration (chondromalacia and arthritis). The early studies showed great promise and proved to be better than any other non-surgical treatment options that we have to offer. Dr. Jones has seen these amazing results in his own patients. To be clear in talking about arthritis, this is not a “cure” that will restore your knee to normal. It does dramatically decrease inflammation and minimize further damage. So the earlier in the degenerative process that you receive treatment, you can expect better outcomes. There are several articles on this site that discuss PRP and its mechanisms of action.

As time moves forward, so does innovation and in last 5 years more research has been done and bringing into the light other options that theoretically have even more benefit than PRP. These include use of autologous bone marrow concentrate, amniotic tissue and umbilical tissue as potential regenerative treatments. There are several articles on this site that discuss these treatments in detail as well.

Dr. Jones and his colleagues are uniquely qualified to discuss these treatment options with you. As orthopaedic surgeons, they have an unparalleled understanding of these ailments and whether they may be a reasonable treatment option for you.
